Studies of the new universal Energia launcher started in Soviet Union on May 15, 1987. It is intended for putting into circumterrestrial orbit ships as well as large-sized spaceships, for scientific studies. Composed of 2 stages (...) it is able to put into orbit 100 t of payload (...) The first launch of this rocket took place on May 15, 1987 at 21 h 30, Moscow time, starting from the cosmodrome at Baikonur. It carried with it, as a payload, a second rocket. This one after the separation of the second stage should go in circular circumterrestrial orbit using its principal engine. However because of a failure of the on-board systems it did not succeed in reaching the orbit and crashed in the Pacific Ocean...
